A Reader Submits... More on PLCs

A LYS Principal submits:

SC,

Unfortunately, the Fundamental Five is viewed the uninformed as merely the “basics.” They actually believe that they already execute the Fundamental Five at an expert level and that the “PLC,” (which they can’t define in actionable terms) is the advanced move that will increase campus effectiveness. They continue to focus on the trivial instead of what matters - practice and action based collaboration.

SC Response

Recently, I was working with some principals that have a new, “feel good, buzz word” boss. I was able to show them that the logical extension of what they have been focused and working on (Foundation Trinity & Fundamental Five) fits perfectly into their new mandate. Next school year they will create PLC’s, where teachers conduct PowerWalks and item analysis of short-term assessment data for the purpose of confirming and replicating localized best practice. Their campus “PLC’s” will be “Working on the Work” of getting better at the Foundation Trinity and Fundamental Five, which as you well know actually improve student performance.

A Little More Fundamental 5 News

Here's a Saturday bonus. We just got the proof back for our TASSP conference program advertisement (courtesy of Dave Martinez at D&M Design). We love it, so we thought that we would let the LYS Nation see it first. The congratulatory notes, texts, tweets and e-mails haven't slowed down. Again, thank you. Also, three more campuses ordered books for all of their staff yesterday. If you want to do the same, call Jo at the LYS Office and she will take care of you (832) 477-5323.

Just a Few More Comments on the Fundamental 5

First of all, Laird and I have been humbled by all of the calls, e-mails and texts congratulating us on the book. Thank you very much for all of the kind words.

Second, because of the LYS Nation after just one day the book shot up to number 18,526 on Amazon’s best seller list. Look out number 18,525 – we’re coming after you. Here’s the link to the book – http://tinyurl.com/4ydqd4t

Third, we will have our first book release event at the TASSP conference. If you are in Austin, Texas on Thursday, June 16 come by and see us at the convention center. We will be on the fourth floor in the common area from 8:30 to 11:15. We will sign books and the first 250 people with a book in hand will receive a Soon to be World Famous Fundamental Five Coffee Tumbler.

Fourth, if you are interested in buying campus or district sets of the book (like four campuses did yesterday) call the LYS offices at (832) 477-5323 and Jo will take your order.

Fifth, here are just a few more comments about the Fundamental 5 that LYSers have recently sent us:

Cain and Laird have identified a new paradigm, which will transform the education of children by distilling research and applying the basic fundamentals of blocking and tackling to the classroom. Within a year, Cain and Laird's formula has dramatically taken many Texas schools from worst to first. Cain and Laird hold the keys to the future of transformative education...The Fundamental Five is simply the best teaching system I have seen. It will change education. And with it, the lives of a generation of children." Robert Brezina, President – United States Academic Decathlon

“We implemented the Fundamental Five on my campus this school year. Right after spring break, one of my most veteran teachers told me that she had come to the conclusion that implementing the practices in her room had brought an increased sense of rhythm and purpose to her teaching. She added that lessons that were always difficult for students in prior years, were less so this year. Bottom line, the Fundamental 5 made a noticeable impact in her ELA classroom.” Unnamed LYS Principal

“Since I have heard you (Cain) talk about "five for five", I have not seen it until today. Ms. Holland, a 5th grade teacher at Johnson Elementary in GPISD, nailed all of the Fundamental Five practices in the time span of just one short observation. When I acknowledged her effort and expertise, her class gave her a round of applause. How cool is that?” Jim Davis, LYS Coach

“Though skeptical at first (I’ve been to lots of trainings by lots of big names) The Fundamental Five works! There is a big difference between telling teachers that they should do something different and providing them with the tools that allows them to do something different. The Fundamental Five are the tools that every teacher needs. Thank you.” Unnamed LYS Teacher

“Purposeful discussion and positive emotions are vital to supporting educational achievement. I loudly applaud the authors in offering teachers practical advice as to how this can be achieved in their classroom.” Dr. Rich Allen, author, international speaker and trainer

It's Finally Here - The Fundamental 5: The Formula for Quality Instruction

THE FOLLOWING IS A REPRINT FROM THURSDAY, MAY 12, 2011

We’ve been like kids waiting for Christmas morning. When will the day ever arrive... But to our surprise, three weeks ahead of schedule, we received notice yesterday that the new book “The Fundamental Five: The Formula for Quality Instruction” is now available on Amazon.com (here’s the link to the page – http://tinyurl.com/4ydqd4t ).

If you are interested in buying campus or district sets of the book (as some of you have already requested) call the LYS offices at (832) 477-5323 and Jo will take your order. Thank you to all of the LYSers who have sent us congratulatory notes and below are just a couple of the positive comments we have received.

"In a time when both institutions and individuals in education are universally being challenged to 'do more with less,' we find two fresh new voices [Cain and Laird] ready to take the challenge by delving into the idea that it is the small changes in instructional practice that makes college-ready learning in every classroom a real possibility...The story and practice that Cain and Laird bring to a new generation of teachers and principals is as exciting as anything I have witnessed." - E. Don Brown, past president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals

The Fundamental Five: The Formula for Quality Instruction is more than a theoretical treatise, and it is certainly not a book that re-covers the well traveled paths so often used as talking points in public education. Solidly anchoring one corner of Cain’s Foundation Trinity, the Fundamental Five has the power and ‘how-to’ tone that can transform America’s schools.” - Dr. Michael Seabolt, High School Principal

If you are not familiar with the Fundamental Five, this is a must read. The workshops can change the way one teaches, the way a principal does walk thru’s, and the way your students learn. We did this in my district this year and it has transformed our many ‘good’ teachers into ‘outstanding’ teachers.” - Andy Peters, Superintendent

Top LYS Tweets from the Week of May 1, 2011

I regularly have educators tell me that they want me to advocate for their district to provide them with cell phones, laptops and now I-Pads. And I always respond by telling them I can think of no idea that could be more career damaging. Not to my career, but to theirs. For years I have been explaining to educators that they need to use their own e-mail accounts, their own computers and their own cell phones. This is not because I don’t trust educators. This is because if you use district issued accounts and equipment, everything that you do becomes public information. And out of context, everything you receive and send will be used against you, if someone has an axe to grind. And right now, there are a lot of nut jobs out there with a perceived axe to grind. So understand, when I advocate the use of bootleg technology (cell phones, tablets, notebook computers, etc.) I want you to use your own equipment. Yes, I understand there is a personal cost involved, but think of it as a personal insurance policy as you become more integrated in the digital age.

A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using bootleg technology devices to follow Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us. To let you see what you are missing, here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of May 1, 2011, as tabulated by the accountants at Price Waterhouse.

1. I’m holding the final printer's proof of "The Fundamental 5: The Formula for Quality Instruction" in my hands. Book available for all in 2 weeks

2. Congratulations to LYS (and Game On!) assistant principal Jae Simpson- Butler. She is the new principal at Hemmingway Elementary!

3. Tonite's run thought: Great schools understand that May is the first month of the Fall semester.

4. Tonite's run thought: Elite LYS campus leaders conduct over 600 documented classroom observations a year. What's your number?

5. I’m at a large (1,000+ students) Title 1 LYS school. This year they have averaged less than 1 office referral a day. The power of Foundation Trinity & the Fundamental Five!

6. I’m at a LYS school (Austin Elementary) - initial TAKS scores increased 5 points in both math & reading. Plus, they had a 5-point increase in commended rates. (P.S. – They were Exemplary in 2010)

7. Morning meeting with teachers worried about increasing class size. They asked for solution, but didn't like my answer - Vote against republican incumbents (since they vote against us).

8. One explanation for the current quality of our political leaders: Less than 25% of 12th graders scored "proficient" on the civics section of the NAEP.

9. The mission of a LYS Elementary School: McFee guarantees a solid academic and social foundation to inspire individuals to achieve their true potential.

10. Worried that parents won't support bootleg technology? Don't be. The Speak Up Report found that 67% of parents would buy a device for their child, if school use was allowed.

Teacher Appreciation - Fundamental 5 Dedications

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, Dr. Mike Laird and I would like to share the dedications from our soon to be released (within the next three weeks) book, “The Fundamental 5: The Formula for Quality Instruction”.

Laird’s Dedication:

I dedicate this book to the most important people in education today, classroom teachers. When all is said and done, it is the teachers who do the heavy lifting in education. What and how well they teach our children is critical to our future success as a society, and they deserve the best leadership and support that we can provide them.

Cain’s Dedication:

I dedicate this book to the five educators who made the biggest impact on my education, career, and life: Ronald Maas (Aldine ISD), Betsy Shipper (Aldine ISD), Tommy Wallace (Aldine ISD), Roy Smith (Aldine ISD), and Richard Hooker (University of Houston). I stand on their shoulders.

Remember the Main Objective is to Drain the Swamp

My grandfather (a very successful military and business leader), kept a plaque on his wall that read, “When you are up to your rear in alligators, it is hard to remember that the main objective is to drain the swamp.”

After my Dr. Seuss books, that plaque is the first thing I remember reading. As I have matured, that message has gone from funny to cliché, to sublime. As educators we spend a lot of time wrestling with the alligators (both real and imagined) when if we would just drain the swamp, the alligators will just go away.

Case in point. As I have experienced and reported, and as numerous LYSers can attest, when we improve the quality of instructional leadership and classroom instruction, student discipline rapidly improves. However, I was recently on a campus where the “answer” to all of the problems that the campus faces is to send teachers to “Capturing Kids Hearts,” training over the course of the next year. Now I have been CHK trained and I am a fan, but this is a classic “wrestle the alligator” reaction. The answers to the problems on this campus revolve around proactive, supportive campus leadership and better implementation of effective instructional practices. The “drain the swamp” solution is the Foundation Trinity and the Fundamental Five.

If you never address the underlying problem, the symptoms never improve.

The Countdown Officially Begins, T minus 30

Yesterday, Dr. Laird and I approved the final digital proof for our book, “The Fundamental Five: The Formula for Quality Instruction”. This means that we will get the hard copy draft in our hands within 10 days and the book will be available within 30 days. To say that we are excited is an understatement. And as many of you have already requested, we promise that there will be a release event and a book signing or two, so watch the blog and the LYS Nation Twitter feed for more details.

Since we noticed some data anomalies a little over four years ago, the Fundamental Five has taken a life its own. Dr. Laird and I have conducted over 15 national presentations to thousands of board members and district administrators. There have been over two hundred campuses that have adopted the Fundamental Five as its core instructional framework. And LYS has trained over ten thousand of teachers on how to seamlessly integrate the Fundamental Five into their daily routine. The results have been nothing less than stunning. But as a LYSer, you already know that.

Which brings me to a favor that I want to ask the LYS Nation. Send me your Fundamental Five anecdote, success story, or endorsement. When I share with the world the success of the LYS Nation, I’m often accused dealing in hyperbole. No one wants to believe that they are not already working at the peak of effectiveness. So let me attach some more names and schools to this continuing story of student, teacher and school success.

Top LYS Tweets from the Week of April 17, 2011

I'll keep it short and to the point today. Bootleg technology is the real answer to 1:1 computing, stretching limited budget dollars, and keeping classrooms relevant in an ever-changing world. Now for the LYS’ers in Texas, go kick the last TAKS week square in the teeth.

A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using bootleg technology devices to follow Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us. To let you see what you are missing, here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of April 17th 2011, as tabulated by the accountants at Price Waterhouse.

1. Fifth classroom in a row hitting 3 out 5 of the Fundamental Five! And every classroom so far is clean, organized, and purposeful. Great job, SMTC teachers!

2. Watching 150 hospitalized students line up quietly, get their lunch & converse politely in small groups while they eat. Kids will meet modeled expectations.

3. Congratulations to LYS Principal, Suzy Meyer (Crockett ES, Grand Prairie ISD) for being named a TEPSA distinguished principal finalist!

4. Run Thought - Part 1: If your early TAKS results are good, remember the immortal words of Han Solo, "Great kid! Now don't get cocky!"

5. Run Thought - Part 2: If your early TAKS results were not good, remember your Churchill, "We shall fight...we shall never surrender!"

6. I visited three schools today. One school had adults that modeled student expectations, two did not. Guess where I observed the most teaching & learning?

7. Tonight’s Run Thought: If you punish students for not following a dress code that you yourself do not model - you are a hypocrite and a bully.

8. Increasing class size without increasing support and training is a sure way to increase teacher stress and decrease the quality of instruction.

9. Tonight’s Run Though: I can't wait for the Republican primary. Then I get to vote against all the incumbents that refuse to support public education.

10. The question is how did attending private school influence current education reformers? Easy, they have confused peer groups and resources with teacher quality.

Top LYS Tweets from the Week of April 10, 2011

Technology is changing by the minute. The rule use to be that the brand new laptop computer you bought today was already six months obsolete. Now laptops are obsolete. Just this week, while I was a passenger in a vehicle driving 70 miles an hours on a freeway between cities, I used my USB cellular card in a notebook computer to participate in a Skype videoconference with a group in the Ukraine. It was as clear as if I was sitting at the table with the group. And it was free.

At this point, the ability to keep up with advancements in technology applications is too much for one busy educator. The solution is to empower everyone on your campus to looks for ways to leverage the power of technology. And by everyone, I mean students, teachers and administrators. The collective will identify and implement what works, faster than any one individual. Embrace bootleg technology now.

A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using bootleg technology devices to follow Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us. To let you see what you are missing, here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of April 10th 2011, as tabulated by the accountants at Price Waterhouse.

1. At Abell Junior High - Ms Heronema’s ELA class is on fire. 5 for 5 on the Fundamental 5!

2. At Abell Junior High - Real world, real time relevance in an English class. Ms. Worster is CRAZY!!!

3. Dale Mitchell, the principal at Hutto Middle School entered the 75,000th observation into the PowerWalks system today!

4. Late to start, quick to finish instruction is the biggest self-inflicted wound to teacher effectiveness.

5. If the pace of change to your practice is best measured in calendar years, your status as an expert is suspect.

6. Great audience in Central Texas. They were floored by the one-year improvement in instruction that we are witnessing at MISD junior high schools.

7. The hidden benefit of the Foundation Trinity is that it exposes lazy actors at all levels in the system.

8. In business effective bullying can substitute for leadership for a long time. Less so, in school leadership.

9. Why are teacher certifications critical (NCLB highly qualified requirements), but exemptions and waivers for politically appointed education leaders are the norm?

10. Why do politicians target the poor, mentally ill, infirm and kids for budget cuts? Those groups don't vote or contribute to re-election campaigns.

I was talking to some teachers this week that reported that it is still policy and practice in their district to confiscate cell phone and charge $25.00 for their return. I wish that I could say that this is an isolated case, but it is not. Instead of embracing a chance to introduce real world relevance into our schools and our classrooms, too many of us are stuck in a school paradigm that has little resemblance to the student life after 3:00 pm.

Consider the story of one of my mentors, Wayne Schaper, Sr. When he was a principal in the 80’s, he was a pioneer in the use of (then) new technology to manage student records, grades, schedules, etc. His secret? He had an office aide that had a knack for working with the unreliable, clunky boxes that passed for office computers. So he gave the student free rein to play, learn, build and figure out how to make the box useful, which he did. Schaper went on to be one of the great school leaders of his era. Oh, and the student, Michael, he went on to found Dell Computers. Embrace bootleg technology now.

1. Ms. Richards at Burnet ES was 5 for 5 on the Fundamental Five!

2. Ms. Lopez at Burnet ES was 5 for 5 on the Fundamental Five. Back to back classrooms. Burnet primary teachers are on fire!

3. The San Jacinto Junior High English Department has tied the current unit’s research paper to the social studies curriculum. Awesome!

4. Today's run thought: Effort, no matter how poor, trumps talk, no matter how great.

5. Cover art and early endorsements for our soon to be released book "The Fundamental 5: The Formula for Quality Instruction" can be seen at www.TheFundamental5.com

6. My first change to cell phone policies. Instead of the "Keep Hidden" rule, implement a "Keep Visible" rule. This is much easier to monitor.

7. With activities not related to teaching and learning: 1 - Do you recognize them? 2 - Why are you doing them?

8. WooHoo!!! You can now access the PowerWalks site thru www.PowerWalks.com. Or, you can still use www.PowerWalks.net

9. Hooray! The first LYS national ad is in today's on-line NASSP Principals' Update. To get your free subscription to the NASSP Principal Update, e-mail nassp@multibriefs.com

Top LYS Tweets from the Week of March 27, 2011

Since I’ve started my “Embrace Bootleg Technology” enjoinders, when I am on campuses people are starting to show me the little things they are trying to do. That’s the key. Start trying little things. Bootleg technology will change the way we do business, but not overnight. Just think, 20 years ago we all carried extra quarters in our pockets for the pay phones. When is the last time you used a pay phone? So this week, try a “Flash Lab” (my new term). What’s a flash lab? Instead of taking all your kids to the computer lab for some contrived activity, have the class pull out their cell phones, I-pods, and I-Pads and have them research some current event that is tied to the content you are teaching that day. They make super computers by simply linking a bunch of regular computers together. Imagine what could happen when you let every student in your classroom have focused access to the little computer that they are currently hiding in their purse, pocket or backpack. Embrace bootleg technology now.

A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using bootleg technology devices to follow Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us. To let you see what you are missing, here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of March 27th, as tabulated by the accountants at Price Waterhouse.

1. We just approved the final cover art for the book, "The Fundamental 5: The Formula for Quality Instruction"! The book drops within 90 days!

2. Don't have enough graphing calculators for your students? There's a free graphing calculator app at the App Store. Bootleg technology saves money!

3. LYS Bootleg Tech Update: In an LYS Middle School (Title I -very poor) – kids are using cell phones to research in class. 85% have a phone. The rest of the students share with a partner.

4. In a HS classroom where three students are trying to convince themselves the Styx was a cool band. "Kilroy was Here,” refutes that argument.

5. Morale follows performance. Performance does not follow morale. It's the difference between causation and correlation.

6. Dr. Susan Hull and Dr. Doug Killian share my personal “Superintendent of the Week” award.

7. I'm a fan of the Hippo!

8. Corporal punishment is a short cut that precludes effective student management. Why is this still a debate? Does revenge feel that good?

9. Just read article where a teacher laments that the state doesn't value her PhD. It doesn't and shouldn't. It values her students' performance.

10. I'm a fan of KIPP. But KIPP doesn't play by the same rules. This is the real lesson for other schools. "Change the rules to fit your vision."

1:1 computers is the stated goal of a lot of schools right now. I would argue that is that is your goal that you are looking in the wrong direction. Instead, I believe that the goal should be 1:1 connectivity. Every student with on-line access with some sort of device. In fact, I would not be surprised if the laptop I’m working on right now is the last computer I buy. I already conduct most of my work on my I-Phone and I-Pad. It would not take much to make a 100% conversion. Embrace bootleg technology now.

A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using bootleg technology devices to follow Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us. To let you see what you are missing, here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of March 20th, as tabulated by the accountants at Price Waterhouse.

Have you embraced bootleg technology? Consider this your weekly reminder. And for those of you on Spring Break this week, this is the perfect time to explore the ever evolving world that you can access through your smart phone, tablet computer, or other hand held connected device. A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using these devices (bootleg technology) to follow Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us. To let you see what you are missing, here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of March 6th, as tabulated by the accountants at Price Waterhouse.

1. To paraphrase Governor Perry (Texas): How the districts choose to deal with the crisis that I created is a local decision.

2. The only way to avoid disaster during education downsizing is to ensure the remaining staff have adequate tools, training & support.

3. Does anyone really believe that having the principal off campus 2 to 3 times a week is a good idea? Then why is it Standard Operating Procedure in most districts?

4. Tonight's run thought: If YOU have 100 reasons why YOUR students can't... YOU are correct.

5. Proud of Texas Educators. Teach kids, run schools, then demonstrate during their free time.

6. Parent Involvement Tip: Reserve your best parking for parents & visitors instead of for everyone on campus with a title other than teacher.

7. Today's run thought: A plan’s complexity is directly correlated to the level of avoidance of personal accountability.

8. The problem with revamping educator evaluation: Politicians don't know what to look for and educators only want to be responsible for the process.

9. My I-phone gives me access to the breadth of human knowledge. So why do we punish students who bring them to school? Embrace bootleg technology!

10. Report indicates text messaging may improve student performance. LYS'ers implementing the Fundamental Five aren't surprised.

A Reader Writes... (Go on a Field Trip)

In response to the 12/16/2010 post, “Go on a Field Trip,” a reader writes:

What is the Fundamental Five?

SC Response

The Fundamental Five are the five instructional practices that magnify the effect of every other high yield instructional practice. Essentially, the Fundamental Five represent the blocking and tackling of quality instruction. Execute them at high frequency and high quality and student performance skyrockets. Ignore them and the job keeps getting more stressful and difficult.

The book, The Fundamental Five: The Formula for Quality Instruction, will be released by the publisher in late May, early June.

The practices are a game changer!

A Reader Writes... (Curriculum Myth - Part 2)

In response to the 12/10/2010 post, “Curriculum Myth,” a LYS Principal writes:

Sean did a good job of fielding this one. Let's look at your opening statement:

Shouldn't curriculum, instruction and assessment all be standards-oriented, research-based and data driven?

The answer to this question is "YES"

From a curriculum theory standpoint, you have the taught curriculum, the prescribed curriculum, and the learned curriculum.

Curriculum begins with standards. In Texas, the State Board of Education (SBOE) determines these standards. Standards should be research based with input from society, experts, and anticipation on the needs of students in a changing future, etc. TEA uses the SBOE standards (TEKS) and builds assessment of those standards (TAKS, STAAR). Pearson uses a whole lot of experts (and money) to develop assessments. These assessments are research based and to paraphrase Willard Daggett, “For a standardized test, TAKS is pretty good."

You have no control of the tested standards. And there is NO need for YOU to research them. The research has been professionally conducted and the assessment is what it is. Are those standards research based? Maybe, maybe not. You really have to follow the buffoonery that is SBOE deliberations to answer this question and if you do follow the buffoonery, you know the answer.

Once we know the tested standards, we work on the prescribed curriculum. We select a curriculum that we trust is aligned to tested standards. Again, no need to do the research, it has been done for you when the standards were determined, just align your prescribed curriculum to the tested standards.

Next you have the taught curriculum, what happens in the classroom, and the learned curriculum, which also happens in the classroom. This is where PowerWalks, the Fundamental Five and common assessments come in. We use frequent common assessments (which are probably not research based) to verify that the taught and learned curriculum is aligned with the prescribed curriculum.

From top to bottom it looks like this:

1. Standards (partially research based, partially politically and ideologically motivated) developed/approved by the SBOE.

2. Tested standards based upon SBOE standards (TEKS). Tested standards are developed by TEA (TAKS, STAAR). The tested standards are definitely research based, but not by you. You can conduct your own research, but the State is not interested in the results of your research.

3. Your district chooses a curriculum (C-Scope, C-CAP, et al.) that is aligned to the tested standards. Again, no research required, just verify the prescribed curriculum addresses the needs of the tested standards, which is a scope and sequence issue, not a research issue. At this step, we are looking for alignment, not validity and reliability.

4. Verify that the taught and learned curriculums are tightly aligned to the prescribed curriculum.

So yes, curriculum is in theory, research based. But in our case no research is required. BTW, you get an A+ and get to go to the head of the class if you can analyze the process described in steps 1-4, find the weaknesses, and create practical solutions to address those weaknesses. The process will require no research.

I have a lot of principals and central office types ask me how to respond to teachers who are attacking C-Scope, claiming C-Scope is not research based. I hope here I have made it clear C-Scope has no need to be research based, it just needs to align to the tested standards, and it is.

SC Response

If I did a good job with my response, you did a great job with yours.

All I will add is this. I want teachers to be experts. But to create a staff of experts I have to narrow the focus, not expand it. So to create a staff of experts in the delivery of instruction (the art of teaching), I have to take something off their plate. Outsource the “what to teach” (constant research) and the “when to teach it” (constant evaluation) issues to other experts. Translation: Leadership must bring an aligned scope and sequence to the instructional staff so they can focus their time and brainpower on becoming expert teachers.

Think. Work. Achieve.
