COMING NEXT WEEK... The 2nd Annual MARCH FOR A CURE PowerWalk-athon!

Cancer is a bitch. And it needs to have its ass kicked.

We at Lead Your School want to ensure that Cancer’s ass is kicked, now!

To do this we are announcing our second annual March For A Cure campaign. For every PowerWalks classroom observation that is conducted between March 1 and March 31, 2017, LYS will donate 5¢ to the American Cancer Society.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…

For every campus that makes the PowerWalks Cancer Fightin’ Hero List for March, LYS will donate an additional $10.00 to the American Cancer Society.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…

For the top PowerWalks Cancer Fightin’ Hero Elementary School, Middle School, Alternative School, and High School in March, LYS will donate $50.00 to the American Cancer Society, in the name of the school.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…

For the overall top PowerWalks Cancer Fightin’ Hero School in March, LYS will donate $100.00 to the American Cancer Society, in the name of the school.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…

Every PowerWalks observer who conducts 200 or more classroom observations during the month of March, LYS will send you a March For A Cure t-shirt.

Last year, the LYS Nation PowerWalked to its way to a $1,113.25 American Cancer Society donation. The goal to beat has been set, lace up you running shoes and go visits a lot of classrooms as we March For A Cure!

I Taught Better, Now What (C)

A lot of educators share the following common concern with me, “I know I’m teaching better, how come my results aren’t better.”

There are three basic answers.  Here are the links to the first two answers (Answer A on 1/12/17) and (Answer B on 1/1/17).  Here is the last and most nuanced reason.

It takes time and system exposure.

First, the closer the student is to pure family influence, the less influence the teacher has.  Which means that a Kindergarten teacher will SEEMINGLY (not actually) make less of an impact than some 5th grade teachers.  In Kindergarten, the family has been the primary education source for 4 to 5 years.  In just one year of Kindergarten, there is a limit to the amount of education value that can be added.  In 5th grade, the teacher is receiving a student that has had four to five years of formal education added to the base of family education. This allows for a potentially greater one year growth.

Second, the more effective the instructional system educating the child the greater the potential growth.  The effective system magnifies the effect of teachers, each year. Meaning the longer the student is enrolled in the system, the higher the performance.

You can view this effect in the performance data of the high performing Title 1 elementary school. In Kindergarten, student performance is barely above what is predicted by student demographics. Then each subsequent grade level begins to perform above peer expectations.  This culminates with 5th grade scores rivaling much more affluent schools.

Think. Work. Achieve.

When a School Improvement Plan Isn't

The easiest to implement school improvement plan is…

SEGREGATION (If you feel like you’ve just been punched in the gut… You should).

Just segregate those with either money, talent, or motivation from those who don’t and sure enough, the chosen few will outperform the unfortunate masses. It’s not the school, it’s not the teacher, it’s the separation (segregation) that creates the change in group performance.

School Segregation (a false improvement strategy) benefits the few to the detriment of the many. But segregation doesn’t improve at scale, it destroys.  Which is why the political opportunists behind vouchers, poverty driven ratings and sanctions, and corporate takeovers of public schools are either misguided, dangerous, racist or some combination of the three.
