New Book Release - Look at Me: A Cautionary School Leadership Tale

I’m happy to share with the LYS Nation that my latest book, Look At Me, A Cautionary School Leadership Tale, is now available at Amazon.com.  Written in the style of a fairy tale, the story reminds us of what can happen when we lose sight of the fact that we are servant leaders.  The link will take you to the book page. http://tinyurl.com/lookatmebook

PowerWalks Hero Schools - 2011/2012 Roll Call

Change is hard. Change that leads to measurable improvement in student performance, harder still.  Which is why I post the monthly PowerWalks Hero School list.  If teams of teachers are to have a fighting chance to not only teach at full speed but also incrementally change the way the way they do it, they need regular feedback, support and affirmation.  That does not occur when administrators are stuck in their offices.  When a school makes the PowerWalks Hero School list that is an indication that for at least that particular month, campus administrators were able to push administrivia to the side and get out to where the action is, classrooms. And the more time administrators spend close to the action, the more responsive they become to actual student and teacher need.

So here is the roll call of PowerWalks Hero Schools for the 2011/2012 school year. And your goal for next year?  If you aren’t on the list, get on it.  If you are on the list, get on it more often.

PowerWalks Hero Schools (May 2012)

As is now a LYS Nation tradition, we will take time to tip our caps to the campuses that are taking the most important step in creating and maintaining an action oriented professional learning community.  These are the campuses that have conducted an extraordinary number of formative classroom observations in a given month.  Due to state-wide testing and typical end of the school year events, for the month of May the cutoff numbers were as follows:

Big Schools – 150 PowerWalks Observations
Medium Sized Schools – 100 PowerWalks Observations
Small Schools – 75 PowerWalks Observations
Very Small Schools – 40 PowerWalks Observations.

So without further adieu, here are your thirteen PowerWalks Hero Schools for the Month of May.  Congratulations!!!

Top LYS Tweets From the Week of May 27, 2012

I have three figures for you to consider, 59%, 66%, and 65%.

Any idea what those numbers represent?  I’ll share. In a survey (Speak Up 2011) of over 410,000 students, parents and educators 59% of high school students reported that they want to use their personal mobile devices (bootleg technology) in classrooms. 66% of parents surveyed replied that not only do they want their children to be able to use mobile devices (bootleg technology) but would willingly purchase them in support of enhanced learning. So far, so good.

Now, for the sticky wicket. 65% of school principals report that the student use of personal mobile devices (bootleg technology) will not be allowed on their campuses in the upcoming year.  The availability of the tools is quickly reaching a saturation point; our communities are open to their use in instruction; all that is needed is a leadership and a plan.  And “No” is not a plan.

A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using your own bootleg technology devices to follow Twitter.  If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us.  To let you see what you are missing, here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of May 27, 2012.

1. LYSer, Dr. Christy Hansen, is the new Executive Director of Secondary Schools in Tyler ISD! Who will be next?

2. Happy Friday LYS Nation! Thanks for teaching the Hutto MS Hippos the Fundamental 5 to make our classrooms come alive. (By @6thgradersrule)

3. When people say class size doesn't matter, they are talking about other people's children. (By @joe_bower)

4. Voter turnout for the Texas Primary was about 10%. That means if you voted, your vote counted 10 times. Your vote matters - a lot!

5. I voted for pro-public education candidates and against anti-public education candidates. Feels good!

6. My school is a polling site and has seen just over 70 voters today. The site serves 6 precincts. Wow. (By @DrJerryRBurkett)

7. The school funding issue impacts every educator in Texas. Yet we had 10% voter turnout. As a profession, is that policy agreement, ignorance or apathy?

8. (In response to the suggestion that teachers don’t vote because they are busy) That is a weak excuse. 1 - We have early voting. 2 - We are in crisis. 3. We're supposed to be the critical element of democracy.

9. About to meet with a group of professors at UH. They are considering studying the ongoing measurable effect LYS support has on campus and student performance.

10. Just approved the final proof of my latest book, Look at Me: A Cautionary School Leadership Tale. Will be available next week on Amazon!

Think. Work. Apply.
