I have three figures for you to consider, 59%, 66%, and
65%.
Any idea what those numbers represent? I’ll share. In a survey (Speak Up 2011)
of over 410,000 students, parents and educators 59% of high school students reported that they want to use their
personal mobile devices (bootleg technology) in classrooms. 66% of parents surveyed replied that
not only do they want their children to be able to use mobile devices (bootleg
technology) but would willingly purchase them in support of enhanced learning.
So far, so good.
Now, for the sticky wicket. 65% of school principals
report that the student use of personal mobile devices (bootleg technology)
will not be allowed on their campuses in the upcoming year. The availability of the tools is
quickly reaching a saturation point; our communities are open to their use in
instruction; all that is needed is a leadership and a plan. And “No” is not a plan.
A number of you in the LYS Nation are now using your own
bootleg technology devices to follow Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, we want you to join us. To let you see what you are missing,
here are the Top 10 LYS Tweets from the week of May 27, 2012.
1. LYSer, Dr. Christy Hansen, is the new

6. My school is a polling site and has seen just over 70 voters
today. The site serves 6 precincts. Wow. (By @DrJerryRBurkett)
7. The school funding issue impacts every
educator in Texas. Yet we had 10% voter turnout. As a profession, is that
policy agreement, ignorance or apathy?
8. (In response to the suggestion that teachers
don’t vote because they are busy) That is a weak excuse. 1 - We have early
voting. 2 - We are in crisis. 3. We're supposed to be the critical element of
democracy.
9. About to meet with a group of professors at
UH. They are considering studying the ongoing measurable effect LYS support has
on campus and student performance.
10. Just approved the final proof of my latest
book, Look at Me: A Cautionary School Leadership Tale. Will be available next
week on Amazon!
Think. Work.
