Best Quote of the Week Award

And the winner is… Scientists! With the following quote, “Science classes should engage students, not bore them.”

Leave it to the scientists to be the voice of reason. Why anyone would think that boring lecture with no real world application and/or hands on activity is acceptable, is a mystery to me. But, I can promise you that that is the norm, not the exception. The campuses that are the exception are the ones that are significantly out-performing their peers.

Think. Work. Achieve.

Your turn...

Scientists like Leon Lederman get it and have for a long time. In general it is public education that does not get it. We have TEKS that have kids learning quantum numbers associated with electrons and details of the Kreb cycle in general science courses. I am talking about pointless stuff that the average person will NEVER need to know, not even to be considered scientifically literate. We basically teach science in high school like every student is going to be a science major in college. By the way, we do the same thing in math and English, and the situation is much worse now with 4x4. It is darn hard to engage kids in a science course when most of the curriculum is irrelevant. I say this by the way as a high school principal who in a former career was a professional research scientist.
